Contests
This is a heavily math-based system. If math is not your forte, try using this online calculator to help you if you don't have easy access to one. If you're still confused on how things work, check out the shorter explanation in the FAQ. If you're still confused, ask someone who knows the system for assistance such as another Coordinator player or one of the mods (mainly Olivia) for help. You know what else you can't have a Hoenn game without? Contests! They're one of the things that make Hoenn so unique and it's likely because of contests that the Hoenn region holds a special place in our hearts. And here we're going to explain how contests work in Abundant Relations! First off, how often will we have contests? We probably won't start running them for another two months after the opening date to give Coordinators some time to prepare for their first contest. After that, contests will be held in all cities every three weeks. One week before the date of a contest, an entry will be posted in the OOC comm asking for contestants, where you will fill out a form and submit it. All entries will be screened. On the day of the contest, entries will be closed and judged, then unscreened, and you will be notified of the results of the contest. Contests will be run almost exactly how they are in the games. We did make some small changes, but the system is still heavily based on the games. First will be the round where you show off your Pokémon, and after that there will be five appeal rounds in which your Pokémon attempts to impress the judges and audience with its sick moves, most likely while tripping up everyone else. At the end of the appeal rounds, the Pokémon with the most points will get the ribbon. Only first place gets it; the losers get nothing. Too bad, so sad. There are five categories that make up your Pokémon's condition, as well as the different contest categories: Beauty, Cool, Cute, Smart, and Tough. Your Pokémon is judged in one of those categories only; using Tough moves in a Cute Contest will only get you booed off the stage. So pick a category and stick with it! Here are the prizes that you can win from contests: |

Next, we will discuss how to raise your Pokémon's condition, aka contest stats. This can only be achieved by feeding your Pokémon PokéBlocks, which are made from berries. Each Contest Hall has blenders where you can make as many PokéBlocks as your heart desires and store them in your PokéBlock Case. All Coordinators start out with a PokéBlock Case, but everyone else has to purchase theirs from the Hyper Rank Contest Hall in Slateport. Each PokéBlock also has a Sheen level, which determines how "full" your Pokémon is. Once its Sheen hits 255, its condition won't improve anymore. Here is a list of the different types of PokéBlocks and the base points that they award to each stat: |

There are two other factors that affect how many points you get from a PokéBlock (Sheen remains unchanged); where it was made and your Pokémon's preference. The table below will explain what I mean. |
See what I mean now? I sure hope you do. Now you must be wondering; how do I know which flavors my Pokémon likes and hates? By checking out this table over here! Yup, Serebii did the work for us this time. And if you haven't already, check out the berries page to find out which berries you need to make certain PokéBlocks, and where to find them. A Pokémon's condition is extremely important during a contest; it could be the determining factor of whether you win or lose! Here is yet another table of how many points your Pokémon will start off the contest with based on its condition: |
Finally, appeal moves. How do I know how many points my Pokémon earns/loses and takes away from everyone else? Well, Serebii did the work for us on that one, too! Just look up your Pokémon's moves in the Attackdex to figure out what its effect is during a contest and which contests you should use it for (hearts = points). If you use a move in the wrong contest category, you'll lose that many points rather than gain them, so be careful! Another way you can lose points is by repeating the same move multiple times in a row. The first offense will cost you 2 points, the second offense will cost you 3 points, the third offense will cost you 4 points, etc. So try to avoid this! There are certain moves that are exempt from this, such as Hidden Power. There's also a way you can get bonus points, and that is by making use of Contest Combos. By using two moves in a row that are part of a Combo, you will earn 10 bonus points, so plan your moves wisely! |
